Why So Expensive?

Valve addressed the steep pricing directly, attributing it to a dramatic rise in component costs — particularly RAM and storage — over the past year. The company originally projected prices based on the historical trend of hardware getting cheaper over time, a calculation that turned out to be wrong.

“When we began sourcing components for Steam Machine in 2023, we believed we had a solid understanding of how costs would evolve over time, based on years of data showing that computer hardware tends to get cheaper as new technologies emerge. Over the past year or so, however, that pattern reversed sharply — especially for memory and storage components — due to a range of pressures affecting global manufacturing. The prices we’re announcing today reflect the real cost of the components we’ve purchased over the last six months”.

Beating the Scalpers

To keep the first units out of scalpers’ hands, Valve is using a reservation lottery system instead of a standard first-come, first-served sale.

  • Now → June 25: Registration window open — sign up for a reservation or waitlist spot on the Steam hardware page.
  • June 25, 5:00 PM UTC: Valve performs a one-time randomized draw. Reservation holders can purchase soon after; waitlisted customers wait for future stock.
  • June 29: First batch ships to reservation holders.

Note: US and Canadian prices are listed before local taxes. Depending on your state or province, expect to add roughly $150–$250 to the final checkout total.

While you wait for your Steam Machine reservation, don’t forget that you can top up your Steam wallet right now — Baxity Store offers Steam gift cards at competitive prices, ready for instant delivery.
